AP classes in Dubai: how Advanced Placement works, where to sit the exams, and which courses are worth taking
AP classes in Dubai explained: how AP exams work in the UAE, testing if your school is not an AP school, the 1 to 5 scale, and which courses suit which degree.
Most questions we hear about AP classes in Dubai come down to three things. Does my child need them? Where do they sit the exam? Which courses are worth the effort?
The short answers: AP is optional, but for a student in an American curriculum school applying to selective universities, it is the main way to show rigour. The exam has to be taken through a school that is authorised to administer AP, which is simple if your own school is one and takes planning if it is not. And the right courses are the ones that match the degree, not the ones with the longest list of names on a transcript.
What AP actually is
Advanced Placement is a set of college-level courses and exams run by the College Board, the same organisation behind the SAT. Each subject has its own course and its own exam. There is no AP "diploma" you must complete, and no fixed number of subjects. A student can take one AP course or eight.
Each exam is scored on a five-point scale. The College Board publishes what each score means on its AP score scale table:

A 3 is not a failure. What counts as a good score depends on what the student needs it to do.
AP classes in Dubai beside an American diploma, IGCSE or A Levels
In an American curriculum school in Dubai, AP courses usually replace the standard or honours version of a subject in Grades 11 and 12. The school diploma is the qualification. AP is the evidence that the student chose the hardest version of the subjects that matter.
An American diploma on its own tells a selective university little, because the courses behind it vary so much between schools. AP exams are the same everywhere. A 5 in AP Calculus BC means the same thing in Dubai, Sharjah or Chicago.
Some students in British or IB schools also take AP exams, usually to add a standardised signal for a US application or to put a subject studied outside school on record. It is extra load, and US admissions offices already understand IGCSE, A Levels and the IB Diploma. For most British and IB students, strong school grades plus the SAT or ACT is the better use of time. The AP exam window: every May
AP exams take place over two weeks in May. The College Board's AP exam dates page for 2027 lists the weeks of May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14, with each subject in either Session 1 (typically morning) or Session 2 (typically afternoon). Your school's AP coordinator confirms the exact time and room.
Two practical consequences:
- AP exams overlap with the May/June IGCSE and A Level exam series. A student sitting both systems needs a revision plan that accounts for clashes, not two separate plans.
- Each exam is fixed to its date. If two of your AP subjects share a slot, or an AP exam clashes with another exam, speak to the coordinator early about the options the College Board allows.
Scores are released in July, although some can take longer. According to the College Board's page on sending scores, you get one free score send each year you take AP exams, and the deadline to use it is June 20. Your score report includes every AP score you have ever taken, not just this year's.
Where to take AP exams in the UAE
Students and parents cannot order AP exams directly from the College Board. An AP coordinator at an authorised school orders them. If your child's school offers AP, the school handles this and you only need to meet its internal deadlines.
If your child's school does not offer AP, or the student is studying a subject independently, the College Board's guidance on AP around the world sets out the route:
- Search the AP Course Ledger, the official list of schools whose AP courses have passed the AP Course Audit. You can search by country and city, so filter for the United Arab Emirates.
- Identify schools near you that list the subject you want.
- Call each school and ask for the AP coordinator. Ask plainly whether they accept external students this year, for which subjects, and what their fee and internal deadline are.
- If a school agrees, the coordinator creates an "exam only" section in My AP, gives the student a join code to enrol in it, and includes the student in the school's exam order.
Timing matters more than anything else here. The College Board's deadline for schools to submit AP exam orders is mid-November, and schools set earlier deadlines for external candidates. A school can add a student later at its discretion, but late orders can carry a late fee (the coordinator can ask the College Board to waive it for students whose own school does not offer the exam), and no school is obliged to accept you. Start calling in September.
The College Board also lists a few authorised AP test centres outside the US. When we checked for this article, none was in the UAE, so for most families the Ledger-and-coordinator route is the one that matters. The list can change, so check the same College Board page.
On fees: the administering school collects them, and College Board guidance allows schools to charge outside students more to cover extra proctoring and administration, so amounts vary. Ask each coordinator for the total in writing before you commit.
Which AP courses to take for which degree
The most common mistake is choosing AP subjects by reputation. A student heading for engineering with four AP humanities courses and no Physics C has a strong transcript for the wrong degree.

A few facts from the College Board course pages that shape these choices:
- Calculus BC builds on Calculus AB and represents a first-semester college calculus course plus the next single-variable course. Calculus AB covers the first. A student who is secure in precalculus and heading into a maths-heavy degree should usually aim for BC.
- Physics C: Mechanics is a calculus-based college physics course, and the College Board says students should have taken calculus or be taking it at the same time.
- Microeconomics has no recommended prerequisite, which makes it a sensible first AP for a Grade 10 or Grade 11 student.
How many AP courses?
There is no magic number. Selective US universities judge AP load against what the student's own school offers, so two APs from a school with a wide menu read differently from three out of three.
The practical rule we use: take the APs that the intended degree needs, add one or two that show genuine interest, and stop there if the grades are at risk. A 5 in the subjects that matter is worth more than a 3 in eight.
AP scores and college credit: what a score actually buys you
AP scores can do three different jobs, and they are decided by three different people.
Admission. Admissions officers read AP scores and grades as evidence of rigour. There is no fixed cut-off. For US applications, AP sits alongside the SAT or ACT, not instead of it at universities that require a test. Credit or placement. Once admitted, a university may grant credit or let a student skip an introductory course. Many US colleges do this for scores of 3 and above, but each college sets its own policy, often by subject. Some want a 4 or 5. Some give placement but no credit. Outside the US. The College Board says universities in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and beyond recognise AP, and some set specific AP requirements for applicants with an American diploma. An annual AP timeline for a UAE student
This is the plan we would give a family starting in Grade 10. Adjust the grade labels for a British-school student (Grade 10 is Year 11).

Can I take AP exams in Dubai if my school does not offer AP?
