Switching curricula in Dubai: how to move between CBSE, IGCSE and IB without losing a year
Switching from CBSE to IGCSE, IB or A Levels in Dubai? A year-group equivalence table, the windows that work, KHDA placement rules and a readiness checklist.

Switching from CBSE to IGCSE, from CBSE to the IB Diploma, or from IGCSE back to CBSE for JEE or NEET can all be done in Dubai without repeating a year. What decides whether a switch goes well is not the curriculum you pick. It is when you move, which year group your child lands in, and which gaps you close before the first term starts.
If you are still deciding which system suits your child, read our comparison of Indian and international curricula in Dubai first. This article is about the move itself.
Year group equivalence in the UAE: the table to keep
Dubai's regulator, KHDA, publishes an age and curriculum equivalence chart in the appendix of its Student Placement Guidelines FAQ for parents. The rows below cover the secondary years, where most switches happen. Age is the age a child should be by 31 December for a school that starts in September.
| Age by 31 Dec | British (England) | UAE MoE and American | IB programme | What usually happens that year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 | Year 7 | Grade 6 | MYP Year 1 | Start of secondary |
| 12 | Year 8 | Grade 7 | MYP Year 2 | Broad curriculum |
| 13 | Year 9 | Grade 8 | MYP Year 3 | Options chosen for Year 10 |
| 14 | Year 10 | Grade 9 | MYP Year 4 | IGCSE or GCSE course begins |
| 15 | Year 11 | Grade 10 | MYP Year 5 | IGCSE or GCSE exams |
| 16 | Year 12 | Grade 11 | DP Year 1 | AS Level or first year of the Diploma |
| 17 | Year 13 | Grade 12 | DP Year 2 | A Level or Diploma exams |
The quick rule for British schools: the Year number is one higher than the Grade number. Year 11 is Grade 10. Year 12 is Grade 11.
Indian curriculum schools are the awkward case. They start the academic year in April, and KHDA uses a 31 March age cut-off for April-start schools rather than 31 December, so a CBSE class cannot be mapped to a British year by age alone. KHDA's own chart lists students arriving from India one grade number ahead of the UAE grade at the same age, which is why birth month and the school's start month matter. The school confirms placement, not any table online, this one included.
How placement is actually decided
Three rules from the KHDA guidelines explain most of what families experience.
The transfer certificate comes first. For Grade 1 (Year 2) and above, the transfer certificate is the primary placement reference. Where it disagrees with the age chart, the school must notify KHDA before confirming the place.
Grades 10 to 12 are treated differently. KHDA's placement guidelines run only up to Grade 9 (Year 10). The final three years are qualification years, governed by the exam boards and the Ministry of Education, and any placement decision beyond Grade 9 has to be approved by KHDA.
Weak grades are not a reason to move a child down. KHDA states that low grades, late entry or gaps in schooling are not, on their own, valid grounds for a lower grade, and a child who does not yet speak English should get EAL support in the same year group rather than be moved down. Any mid-year change of grade needs KHDA approval.
So a switching child moves with their age group, and the gaps are closed alongside. That is why the months before the switch matter.
When a switch works and when it costs a year
Senior-year courses are mostly two years long with exams at the end. Switching between courses is easy; switching in the middle of one is not.
| The move | Works well | Hard or costly | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBSE to IGCSE | Before Year 10 starts (end of Grade 8 or Class 8) | During Year 10 or Year 11 | IGCSE is designed for 14 to 16 year olds and assessed at the end of the course |
| CBSE to IB Diploma or A Levels | After Class 10 board exams | After starting Class 11 | The Diploma and A Levels are two-year courses starting in Year 12 |
| IGCSE to CBSE | Into Class 11 after IGCSE results | Into Class 10 or Class 12 | CBSE does not allow direct admission to Class 10 or Class 12 |
| IB Diploma to A Levels, or back | Within the first term of Year 12 | After the first term | Coursework, core and subject content diverge quickly |
Two boundaries matter most: the end of Year 9, the last comfortable point to join an IGCSE course, and the end of Year 11 or Class 10, where every sixth form route starts afresh.
The Indian calendar also helps. The main CBSE Class 10 board exams run from February into March (from 2026 there is also an optional second sitting in May to improve scores), and the British and IB sixth form year does not start until late August or September. A student moving from CBSE to the Diploma or A Levels has several months in between, and that gap is where a switch is won.
Switching from CBSE to IGCSE: the gaps to close
A CBSE student usually arrives with solid arithmetic and algebra and the habit of learning a textbook thoroughly. What changes is the style of assessment and some of the content.
English. This is the biggest adjustment. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English, for example, assesses reading through questions on texts students have not seen before, and writing through directed writing and a composition (or a coursework portfolio), marked against published criteria. A student used to answering from a known chapter needs practice writing at length, under time, on an unseen text. Edexcel and AQA specifications differ in detail, so check which board the new school uses; our guide to AQA, Edexcel and Cambridge explains how they differ.
Mathematics. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is tiered into Core and Extended, and a strong CBSE student should aim for Extended. Much of the content is familiar, but the order differs, and topics such as sets, vectors and transformations may be new. Put the syllabus next to your child's last CBSE maths textbook and mark every topic they have not met.
Sciences. CBSE teaches Science as one subject up to Class 10. IGCSE offers Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects (combined science options also exist), and Cambridge IGCSE assessment covers written, oral, coursework and practical components depending on the subject. Students need to learn how to describe a method, handle data and evaluate an experiment in writing.
Exam technique. IGCSE mark schemes reward precise responses to command words such as describe, explain and evaluate. CBSE students often know the content and lose marks answering the wrong question well.
CBSE to IB transfer or A Levels after Class 10
This is the easiest switch to make. Every Year 12 student starts the Diploma or A Levels together, so nobody joins halfway.
What transfers well: mathematical fluency, content depth in the sciences, and the discipline to prepare for a large exam.
What needs building:
- Extended writing and argument, which the Diploma assesses constantly through Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and internal assessments
- Independent research, including choosing a question, finding sources and citing them
- Lab reports written up in full, rather than practical records
- Working to many deadlines through the year, rather than towards one board exam
The adjustment is usually harder for the Diploma, because the load is spread across six subjects and the core. Our comparison of the IB Diploma and A Levels covers which suits which student.
One administrative point is easy to miss. If your child may later study in the UAE, their school-leaving certificate will need Ministry of Education equivalency, and the documents required depend on the curriculum completed. The UAE government's page on equalising high school certificates explains the process. Ask the new school, in writing, how a student who holds CBSE Class 10 rather than IGCSEs meets the equivalency requirements at Grade 12.
Moving from IGCSE or IB to CBSE Class 11 for JEE or NEET
Some families decide after Year 11 that the Indian entrance exam route comes first. The move into CBSE Class 11 is possible, with rules.
CBSE's examination bye-laws on admission set them out, and the receiving school will confirm the current procedure. Class 10 and Class 12 are treated as the second half of two-year integrated courses, so there is no direct admission into either. A student coming from an examining body outside India needs an eligibility certificate from CBSE, which the principal of the receiving school applies for with the student's documents. Admission to Class 9 and above after 31 August needs prior permission. Start the paperwork when IGCSE results arrive.
The academic gaps run the other way from a CBSE-to-IGCSE switch:
- CBSE Class 11 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics assume the NCERT Class 9 and 10 syllabus, including topics an IGCSE student may have met at a different depth or not at all
- JEE and NEET reward speed across a very large syllabus, a different skill from the structured written answers IGCSE trains
- NCERT textbooks become the reference point for school exams
Eligibility for NEET and JEE Main is set out in each year's NTA information bulletin; read the current one, especially the Class 11 and 12 subject requirements, before committing. Our article on NEET and JEE preparation from the UAE covers the preparation side.
A switch-readiness checklist
Work through this before accepting a place. If most items are unticked, rethink the timing.
- The move happens at a natural boundary: before Year 10, or after Class 10 or Year 11
- The new school has confirmed the year group in writing, based on the transfer certificate
- You know which exam board your child will sit, and have downloaded the current syllabus for every subject (our resources page links to the official board sites)
- You have compared that syllabus topic by topic with what your child has actually covered, and listed the gaps
- English writing has been tested at the new standard, not assumed from past school reports
- For IB or A Levels, your child's subject choices keep their likely university course open
- For a move into CBSE, the eligibility certificate application has started and the 31 August date is noted
- If UAE university study is possible, you have asked how Grade 12 equivalency will be met
- There is a plan for the months between the old school year ending and the new one starting
- Your child has seen the new school's workload and teaching style, and wants to go
Timed past papers from the new board make points 4 and 5 far easier. If the switch is also the moment to rethink sixth form subjects, our guide to choosing Grade 11 subjects works backwards from the degree, and a career and subject-fit assessment such as PRISM can add a second view of interests and strengths.
A simple bridge plan for the gap months
For a CBSE student starting the Diploma or A Levels in September, the months after Class 10 are the bridge:
| Period | Focus |
|---|---|
| First month after Class 10 exams | Rest, then read the new syllabuses and list gaps by subject |
| Next two months | Close content gaps in mathematics and the sciences, one topic at a time |
| Throughout | One extended piece of writing a week, marked against the new board's criteria |
| Final month before term | Past paper questions in each chosen subject, and a short practice research task |
For an IGCSE student moving to CBSE Class 11, reverse the emphasis: NCERT Class 10 topics in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics first, then speed on objective questions.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child switch from CBSE to IGCSE in Year 10 or Year 11?
It is possible but hard, because IGCSE is a two-year course assessed at the end and the student joins with part of it already taught. The comfortable point is before Year 10 starts; a later switch needs the school's agreement, KHDA approval from Grade 10 (Year 11) onwards, and a plan to cover missed content.
What is Year 12 equivalent to in Dubai?
Year 12 in a British curriculum school is Grade 11 in UAE Ministry of Education and American schools, and the first year of the IB Diploma.
Can a CBSE student join the IB Diploma after Class 10?
Yes. After Class 10 is the most natural point to switch, because every student starts the two-year Diploma together in Year 12. The main gaps to close are extended writing, independent research and managing many deadlines.
Can an IGCSE student take admission in CBSE Class 11?
Yes, but because IGCSE is awarded by an examining body outside India, CBSE requires an eligibility certificate, which the receiving school applies for. CBSE does not allow direct admission into Class 12.
Will my child have to repeat a year when changing curriculum in Dubai?
Usually not. KHDA places students by transfer certificate and age, and low grades or weak English are not grounds for a lower grade. Placement in Grades 10 to 12 must follow the exam board and Ministry of Education rules, so confirm it with the school in writing.
Career Launcher UAE teaches students on both sides of these switches in Dubai and Sharjah, from CBSE and IGCSE and GCSE subjects to the IB Diploma and other international curricula. If your child is changing system, a subject-level check against the new syllabus shows which gaps to close before the first term and which do not matter.
