What is NEET? A guide for UAE families: full form, pattern, exam cities and NRI seats

In short

NEET is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, run by NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses, with 2026 exam cities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

  • The 2026 paper had 180 questions for 720 marks, with one mark lost per wrong answer.
  • The fee for centres outside India was ₹9,500 in 2026, with English the only medium.
  • In MCC counselling, 15% of deemed university seats go to NRI candidates.

NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. Its undergraduate exam, NEET (UG), is the entrance test for MBBS, BDS and the AYUSH degrees (BAMS, BUMS, BSMS and BHMS) in India. The National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous testing organisation set up by India's Ministry of Education, has conducted it since 2019. In 2026 it could be sat in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.

The facts come from NTA's Information Bulletin NEET (UG)-2026 and notices on neet.nta.nic.in, MCC's 2026 counselling bulletin and NMC, read on 6 November 2026. Every figure is from the 2026 cycle.

NEET full form, and what the result is used for

The bulletin writes "National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG)"; NTA's 2026 result notice says "National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)". Same exam. Since 2020 it has also been the route to MBBS at AIIMS and JIPMER.

NTA's job ends at the result: it conducts the test, declares the result and passes the All India Rank to DGHS. Seats are then filled in counselling: MCC, under DGHS, for the All India Quota and deemed universities among others, and each State for its own quota.

The NEET exam pattern

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Physics45180
Chemistry45180
Biology (Botany and Zoology)90360
Total180720

It is one pen and paper exam of three hours, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Indian time (IST). All 180 multiple choice questions are compulsory, each with four options and one correct or best answer, and there is no optional section. A correct answer earns 4 marks, a wrong one loses 1 and a blank scores 0.

NEET (UG) 2026 was offered in 13 mediums, but at centres outside India the only medium listed is English, and the medium cannot be changed once chosen. The syllabus is set by NMC and posted by NTA as the Syllabus for NEET (UG)-2026: 20 units of Physics, 20 of Chemistry and 10 of Biology. For classes, see our NEET coaching in Dubai and Sharjah.

NEET eligibility

The 2026 bulletin opens NEET to Indian nationals, NRIs, OCI cardholders and foreign nationals.

  • Age: 17 on or before 31 December of the exam year (for 2026, born on or before 31 December 2009). There is no upper age limit
  • Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, with practical tests, plus Mathematics or another elective. A Class 12 student may sit NEET, but must pass Class 12 by the first round of counselling to be admitted
  • Foreign boards: candidates should make sure their qualification is equivalent in scope and standard. Our guide to medicine from the UAE: NEET, UCAT or both covers the subject choices that close the route

The bulletin sets out subjects and age, not a Class 12 percentage, and admission stays subject to the rules of State Governments and institutions, so check the current notice.

To be eligible for admission in 2026, a candidate needed at least the 50th percentile (General and General-EWS) or the 40th (SC, ST and OBC). PwBD candidates needed the 45th in the Unreserved or General-EWS category and the 40th in SC, ST or OBC-NCL. These are percentiles, not percentage marks, and the Central Government may lower them for a year.

NEET exam centres in the UAE

The bulletin lists 14 exam cities under "Outside India": Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, plus Kuwait City, Doha, Manama, Muscat, Riyadh, Kathmandu, Singapore, Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Lagos. Candidates choose three cities from the list for the state of their permanent or present address, and NTA may merge cities or allot one not chosen. The bulletin gives no centre addresses; the centre appears on the admit card.

The 2026 application fee for centres outside India was ₹9,500, one figure for every category, plus processing charges and GST. It is normally not refundable.

On 12 May NTA, with Government of India approval, cancelled the 3 May exam; the matter was referred to the CBI. The re-examination needed no new registration or fee, and May's fees were refunded.

NEET (UG) 2027 dates are not published. As of 6 November 2026, NTA has issued no 2027 dates, bulletin or notice, and its revised examination calendar, which runs to April 2027, does not list NEET (UG). Use 2026 only as a guide to the usual months: applications in February and March, the exam set for May.

To register from the UAE, NRIs, OCI holders and foreign nationals give a passport number as their ID. NRI and OCI applicants also upload a certificate from the Indian diplomatic mission in their country of residence; the NRI format is valid for six months, so ask for it in good time.

NRI and OCI candidates in counselling

MCC counsels the 15% All India Quota seats of the States, AIIMS, JIPMER, the Central Universities and ESIC, and every deemed university seat.

  1. NRI seats are in the deemed universities. MCC allocates 15% of deemed university seats to NRI candidates, under Supreme Court directions.
  2. The 15% All India Quota lists no NRI quota. Its reservations are for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PwD candidates.
  3. OCI cardholders are treated at par with Indian citizens, eligible for UR (General) seats as well as NRI seats, under the Supreme Court order of 3 February 2023.
  4. Verification comes first. Under MCC's notice of 6 August 2026, MCC's NRI Document Verification Team checks NRI and OCI candidates, who can then view both NRI and Indian Unreserved (UR) seats.

Who counts as an NRI. MCC applies principles set by the Supreme Court in 2008: a parent who is an NRI residing abroad; or a first-degree relation who is an NRI, such as a real brother or sister; or a listed near relative (uncle or aunt, grandparent, first-degree cousin) who is an NRI, ordinarily lives abroad, has acted as the student's guardian and gives an affidavit. The documents include an NRI certificate from the Embassy or Indian Consulate.

In 2026, deemed university seats carried a non-refundable MCC registration fee of Rs 5000 and a refundable security deposit of Rs 2,00,000, paid through an NRO account, never straight from an NRE account. NRI quota seats in private medical and dental colleges are run by State authorities, under each State's rules. MCC's 2027 scheme is not out yet; watch its UG medical counselling page.

MBBS abroad still needs NEET

NMC's page for students going abroad says Indian citizens and OCI holders who want a primary medical qualification from outside India must qualify NEET, and treats the result as their eligibility certificate. The result is valid for three years from the date it is declared. Our guide to preparing for NEET and JEE from the UAE covers the two years before the exam.
