Medicine from the UAE: NEET, UCAT, or both, and how to decide before Year 12 decides for you

The short answer: a UAE student can keep both NEET (for India) and the UCAT (for the UK, or UCAT ANZ for Australia and New Zealand) open until Year 13, but only if the decision about subjects is made in Year 11. The two exams test different things, run on different calendars and require different subjects. Preparing for one does little for the other.

Below: what each exam tests, where the dates collide, the subject choices that close a route, a five-question decision framework and a term-by-term plan for sitting both.

Two exams that test very different things

NEET-UG is run by India's National Testing Agency, which publishes an information bulletin each year on neet.nta.nic.in. In the 2026 bulletin, the exam was a single pen-and-paper paper of 180 compulsory multiple choice questions in 180 minutes: 45 Physics, 45 Chemistry and 90 Biology (Botany and Zoology), for a total of 720 marks. A correct answer earns four marks and a wrong answer loses one. It is a syllabus exam, and Biology carries half of it.

The UCAT is a computer-based admissions test run by a consortium of universities, and it does not test science. According to the UCAT format and scoring page, it has four subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Situational Judgement. It lasts just under two hours. The three cognitive subtests are each scored 300 to 900, giving a total of 900 to 2700, and Situational Judgement is reported in Bands 1 to 4, with Band 1 the highest. There is no negative marking. Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn from 2025, so older prep books are out of date.

Preparing for one exam does very little for the other. NEET rewards two years of content revision. The UCAT rewards speed, judgement and a few focused months of timed practice. How NEET preparation fits around a UAE school year is covered in our guide to NEET and JEE preparation from the UAE; this article is about choosing between the routes.

The calendars, and where they collide

UCAT test dates for the 2026 cycle

From the official UCAT test dates page, the 2026 pattern was:

  • Registration opened on 20 May 2026
  • Booking opened on 23 June 2026
  • Testing ran from 13 July to 24 September 2026
  • The booking deadline was 16 September 2026
  • The UCAS deadline for most medicine courses was 15 October 2026
  • Results go to universities in early November

UCAT results are valid for one admissions cycle only: 2026 results count for 2027 entry or deferred entry to 2028. So the test is sat in the summer after Year 12, for an application in the autumn of Year 13. Exact dates change each year, so check the page before planning.

For Australia and New Zealand, the UCAT ANZ site gave a 2026 testing window of 1 July to 5 August.

NEET dates and the May collision

The 2026 NEET-UG application window opened on 8 February and, after an extension, closed on 11 March. The exam was set for 3 May, and the NTA later held a re-examination on 21 June 2026, announced on the NEET site. Take dates from the NTA site, not a coaching calendar.

Here is the real collision. For a British-curriculum or IB student, NEET falls in early May of Year 13, around the start of the May and June exam series, and the UK offer depends on those same A Level or IB grades. For a CBSE student, board exams come first and NEET follows, which is part of why the Indian route is simpler for them.

The subject traps that close a door silently

NEET wants Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English

The NEET-UG 2026 bulletin lists the qualifying subjects as Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Biotechnology, each with practical tests, along with English. For a qualification from outside India, it says the candidate may need a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities confirming that the qualification is equivalent to Class 12 science.

A common A Level set for UK medicine is Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, with no Physics. That student can be a strong UK applicant and still miss NEET's subject list. The bulletin allows a missing subject to be passed later as an additional subject from a recognised board, but that is an extra exam. If India is even a possibility, keep Physics in Year 12 and check equivalence with the AIU. Our guide to choosing Grade 11 and Year 12 subjects shows how to work backwards from the degree.

UK medical schools set their own subject rules

There is no single UK rule, so read each medical school's page. As one example, the University of Manchester's MBChB entry requirements for 2027 ask for AAA at A Level, including Biology (or Human Biology) or Chemistry, plus one more from a listed group: Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Physics, Psychology, and Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The same page says applicants must sit the UCAT in the year they apply, and that Band 3 or Band 4 in Situational Judgement means the application will not be considered. That one rule is why Situational Judgement needs real preparation.

A five-question decision framework

Work through these in order.

  1. Where does your child want to practise long term? Where you train shapes registration and licensing, so decide this first.
  2. Which passport and residency status do you hold? NEET rules differ for Indian nationals, NRIs, OCI cardholders and foreign nationals; NRI and OCI candidates must upload a certificate from the Indian mission in their country of residence. The 2026 bulletin also states that Indian citizens and OCI cardholders who plan to study undergraduate medicine abroad must qualify in NEET-UG, so NEET can matter even on the UK route. Read this year's bulletin and National Medical Commission rules, not a relative's experience.
  3. Which subjects will your child hold at the end of Year 13 or Grade 12? No Physics usually closes NEET unless it is added later as an extra qualification. Without Chemistry or Biology, most UK medical schools are closed; check each school's page.
  4. Which kind of exam suits your child? Some students thrive on steady content revision, others on fast, unfamiliar reasoning. A timed diagnostic beats a guess: LENS·UCAT gives a 45-minute UCAT baseline across the four sections, and a full NEET mock does the same for India.
  5. Does the budget match the route? International fees for UK medicine vary by university and by year of the course. Check each shortlisted school's official fees page before the UCAS form goes in.

If the answers point one way, commit to that route. If they genuinely point both ways, plan as below.

UCAT preparation in the UAE alongside NEET: a Year 12 and 13 plan

This assumes a British-curriculum or IB student applying through UCAS and sitting NEET in May of the final year, on the 2026 pattern.

WhenUK and UCAT trackIndia and NEET track
Year 12, Sept to DecConfirm Biology or Chemistry and a second science. Start clinical or caring experience and keep a record of itConfirm Physics is kept. Begin Class 11 NEET content, Biology first
Year 12, Jan to AprShort weekly UCAT practice to learn the question types. Shortlist medical schools and read their entry pagesContinue NEET content steadily. First timed section tests
Year 12, May to JuneRegister when UCAT registration opens in May. Book as soon as booking opens in JuneProtect school exams. Continue revision at a lighter pace
Summer after Year 12Intensive UCAT practice, then sit it in July or early AugustKeep NEET revision going through the summer
Year 13, Sept to OctFinalise the UCAS application by the 15 October deadline, using four medicine choices and a considered fifthClass 12 content, with Organic Chemistry and Physics problem practice
Year 13, Nov to MarInterview preparation, often for multiple mini interviews, on each school's own scheduleSubmit the NEET application in the February to March window. Take full mocks under exam conditions
Year 13, Apr to JuneFinal A Level or IB revision, because offers are conditional on these gradesSit NEET in early May, in the middle of the exam season
Summer after Year 13Results and confirmation of the placeResults, then counselling for eligible candidates

Two points matter most. Sitting the UCAT early gives you the score before you commit your UK choices, so you can apply where it is competitive. And UCAS allows a maximum of four medicine choices, according to its guide to filling in the UCAS application, so the fifth can be a related course as a UK fallback.

Be honest about the load. From January to May of Year 13, the student is preparing interviews, finishing coursework and revising two years of NEET content. Often the school grades that the UK offer depends on are what suffer, and they also shape the predicted grades on the UCAS form. If autumn mocks show strain, choosing one route in December is a sensible decision, not a failure.

Interviews: the part NEET does not have

NEET leads to counselling and seat allotment by rank, with no interview. UK medical schools interview, often in the multiple mini interview format of short timed stations, and some offer an online option, which saves a UAE family a flight. Each school publishes its own format and dates. The preparation is the same everywhere: explain why medicine, say what your work experience taught you, and reason aloud through an ethical scenario.

If Australia or New Zealand is on the list

The UCAT and UCAT ANZ test the same kind of reasoning but have separate calendars, registrations and universities. You cannot sit both in the same year, and doing so is treated as misconduct, so a student aiming at both the UK and Australia or New Zealand has to choose one test for that cycle. UCAT ANZ is only open to students in, or past, their final year of secondary school, and its results count for one admissions cycle. This comparison of UCAT UK vs UCAT ANZ sets out the differences. The ANZ site notes that some pathways do not require the test, so check each university's international entry page before registering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take NEET and UCAT in the same application year?

Yes. They are separate exams on separate dates: the UCAT in the summer between Year 12 and Year 13, NEET in early May of the final year. The hard part is the workload, not the rules.

Can I sit the UCAT and NEET in the UAE?

Yes. The UCAT runs in Pearson VUE test centres worldwide, and the NEET-UG 2026 bulletin listed Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah as exam cities. Check both lists for your year.

When should a UAE student start UCAT preparation?

Learn the question types in the spring of Year 12, then practise intensively before a July or early August test date. That leaves time to choose universities around your score before the 15 October UCAS deadline.

Is NEET required to study medicine in the UK?

UK medical schools do not ask for NEET. However, the NEET-UG bulletin states that Indian citizens and OCI cardholders who plan to study undergraduate medicine abroad must also qualify in NEET-UG, so Indian passport holders should check the current rules.

Can A Level students without Physics sit NEET?

Not as the subject list stands. The NEET-UG bulletin requires Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English at the qualifying level, though a missing subject can be passed later as an additional subject from a recognised board, which means an extra exam. Check the current bulletin and AIU equivalence before choosing subjects.

How long is a UCAT score valid?

One admissions cycle only. A UCAT sat in 2026 counts for 2027 entry, or deferred entry in 2028, so a student who reapplies after a gap year must sit it again.

Career Launcher UAE prepares students for both routes, with UCAT preparation built around timed practice across the four subtests and NEET preparation built on NCERT content. For families still weighing up the UK, India or Australia, university guidance starts with passports, subjects and deadlines, and only then looks at exams.
