Booking IELTS in the UAE should be simple, but the official pages do not make it easy: different tests, two providers, older prices still showing on some pages, and rules about moving a date that only matter once you need them.

The short version: IELTS Academic or General Training on computer costs AED 1,590 at both official providers in the UAE, IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration costs AED 1,680, and results for computer tests arrive within one to five days. Career Launcher UAE is an official British Council partner for IELTS registration, so you can book the test with us at our centres in Dubai and Sharjah.

The fees and rules below come from the British Council UAE's dates and fees page, IDP's UAE test dates page, the British Council's IELTS terms and ielts.org, checked on 1 November 2026. Fees change, and some older British Council pages still show earlier prices, so confirm the fee when you book.

The British Council and IDP run the same IELTS test, with the same scoring and the same certificate. The fee for the standard test is the same at both.

The paper test has gone. IELTS announced that from mid-2026 it would no longer offer a paper-based test and that all IELTS tests would be on computer. The British Council in the UAE now offers IELTS on computer, or on computer with the Writing section on paper (not for UKVI tests).

Which IELTS test do you need?

Book the wrong one and you pay twice, so settle this first.

  • IELTS Academic is for study at university, undergraduate or postgraduate.
  • IELTS General Training is for work or migration.
  • IELTS for UKVI is the version on the UK Home Office's approved list, for UK visa applications that ask for an approved English test. It comes in Academic and General Training forms.
  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills is for certain UK visa routes, at level A1 or B1.

Academic and General Training test the same four skills; the Reading and Writing tasks differ. Always check what your university, employer or visa route names. If you are still deciding between IELTS, PTE and Duolingo, our comparison of the three English tests starts with that question.

How to book IELTS through Career Launcher

  1. Choose the test and a date range. Work back from your application or visa deadline, leaving room for a retake.
  2. Contact our team at Bur Dubai, Al Nahda 2 or Al Qasimia, Sharjah, by phone, WhatsApp or the enquiry form. Tell us which IELTS test you need and when, and we take you through registration as an official British Council partner.
  3. Have your ID ready. The British Council in the UAE accepts a valid passport or Emirates ID, and you must bring the same document on test day. Without valid ID you cannot sit the test, and you lose the fee. Test takers under 18 need written consent from a parent or guardian.
  4. Prepare, if you need to. If you also want preparation, it can be arranged together with the booking.

The British Council runs IELTS at venues in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ajman, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. IELTS for UKVI is offered in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Test day and the test format

IELTS takes 2 hours 45 minutes:

SectionTime
Listening30 minutes (30 to 34 on computer)
Reading60 minutes
Writing60 minutes
Speaking11 to 14 minutes

The Speaking test is with an examiner and may be on the same day as the other sections or up to a week before or after.

Results and scores

For IELTS on computer, including IELTS for UKVI, the British Council in the UAE releases results within 1 to 5 days of the test, typically within two. Life Skills results take 9 days, and IELTS on computer with Writing on paper takes 13.

Each section is scored on a band from 0 to 9, in whole or half bands. The overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. IELTS recommends that results are treated as valid for two years after the test, though an organisation can choose to accept them for longer.

If one section lets you down, the One Skill Retake lets you resit that skill alone rather than the whole test.

Changing or cancelling a booking

Under the British Council's IELTS terms, which IDP's UAE rules match, for IELTS on computer:

WhenMove the dateCancel
15 or more days beforeFree75% of the fee refunded
5 to 14 days beforeFee of up to 25% of the test feeNo refund
4 days or fewer beforeNot allowedNo refund

A booking cannot be moved to another test format, module, person or test centre. IELTS for UKVI has its own rules: a 75% refund more than 14 days before the test, 50% up to two days before and 25% after that, with one date change allowed more than 14 days ahead. Local terms can differ, so read them when you book.

Before you pay the fee

The fee is the same whether you are ready or not. If you are unsure whether your level is at the band you need, sit a timed practice test first: Listening, Reading and a full Writing task under real timing will show the gap. If it is small, book the test. If it is large, a few weeks of focused preparation costs less than a second sitting.
