IELTS, Duolingo or PTE: Which English Test Should You Actually Take

Most families pick an English test the wrong way round. They compare price, then format, then difficulty, and book the cheapest one that sounds manageable. Then, months later, a visa checklist tells them the score they hold is not on the approved list.

There is only one correct first question in the IELTS vs Duolingo vs PTE decision, and it is not about the test at all.

Name the destination, then name the test.

Everything below follows from that.

The distinction that costs people money

A university accepting a test and a government accepting a test are two entirely separate things. They are decided by different bodies, on different lists, for different reasons.

You can be admitted to a British university on a Duolingo score and still be unable to use that score for your visa. The offer is real. The problem is real too.

So before booking anything, check two pages, not one:

1. The specific course page at the specific university, for the test and the exact score required
2. The government immigration page for the country, if a visa is involved. For the UK that is the Student visa knowledge of English page on gov.uk, for Australia the Student visa subclass 500 page, and for Canada the IRCC study permit pages

If those two pages name different tests, you need the one the government names.

The three tests, honestly

IELTS

IELTS has the broadest acceptance of the three, used by over eleven thousand organisations worldwide. Scored on the familiar 0 to 9 band scale. Roughly two hours forty five minutes. Results in about one to thirteen days depending on format. IELTS is moving fully to computer delivery through 2026 across all markets.

The defining feature is the Speaking test. It is a live interview with a trained human examiner, which means you can hear the question again, read a face, and recover from a bad start the way you would in a real conversation.

Two things give IELTS an edge that nothing else matches:

One Skill Retake. If you score well in three skills and slip in one, you can retake that single skill rather than the whole test. Neither of the other two tests offers this. For a student who is strong overall but weak in Writing, this alone can justify choosing IELTS.

Visa coverage. IELTS for UKVI sits on the UK Home Office approved Secure English Language Test list. IELTS General Training is accepted within Canada's Express Entry. Australia and New Zealand accept it. It is the safest single answer when a visa route is unclear.

PTE Academic

PTE Academic is delivered and scored entirely by computer, including Speaking, which you record into a microphone. Scored 10 to 90 on the Global Scale of English. About two hours. Results often within 48 hours.

That speed is the real argument for PTE. If a university deadline or a visa appointment is close, a 48 hour turnaround is worth a great deal.

The automated marking suits a particular kind of candidate. There is no examiner to read, no rapport to build, and no benefit from charm. Clear pronunciation, steady pace and fluent typing are what the machine rewards. Students who freeze in front of a person often score better here. Students who type slowly score worse, because every written response is typed under time pressure.

The product name matters more than people realise. For a UK visa you need PTE Academic UKVI specifically, not standard PTE Academic. For Canadian immigration, Pearson's approved test is PTE Core, which is a different test again. Book the wrong variant and the score is unusable for that purpose even though the test content is largely the same.

Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test runs about 60 minutes, taken at home on your own laptop, around 65 US dollars, results usually within 48 hours. It is adaptive, so question difficulty moves with your performance.

For university admissions in the United States, it has become genuinely mainstream. Roughly 95 per cent of the US News Top 100 accept it for undergraduate admission, including the Ivy League, and a large share of graduate programmes now do as well. Ireland recognises it for student visas. Many Canadian and European universities take it, and a growing number of UK universities accept it for admission.

Now the limits, because they are the whole story.

The Duolingo English Test is on neither UK Home Office Secure English Language Test list, the one for tests taken inside the UK or the one for tests taken outside it. Australia's Department of Home Affairs does not accept it for a student visa. Canada does not require a language test for most study permits, so a Duolingo score can pass through on the strength of the institution's offer, but IRCC does not list it as a designated testing agency, which makes it the weaker document if anything is questioned.

So Duolingo is an admissions test that sometimes works for visas, rather than a visa test.

The comparison in one table

Rough concordance: PTE 63 is about IELTS 7.0, and PTE 79 is about IELTS 8.0.

So which one

Applying to the United States only, no visa test needed. Duolingo. It is a fraction of the cost, it takes an hour, and acceptance for US admissions is close to universal. The F1 process does not require a separate approved test, so the university's decision is the decision.

Applying to the United Kingdom. IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. Choose between them on format, not acceptance. If Speaking to a person suits you and you might need to retake a single skill, take IELTS. If you are a fast typist who prefers a microphone to an examiner, and you need results quickly, take PTE.

Applying to Australia or New Zealand. IELTS or PTE Academic. Duolingo is not an option at the visa stage regardless of what the university says.

Applying to Canada. Check whether your specific application requires a test at all, since many study permits do not. If it does, IELTS is the safest document. If immigration rather than study is the goal, the test you need is PTE Core or IELTS General Training, not PTE Academic.

Applying to more than one country. IELTS, without much debate. Breadth of acceptance is precisely what you are paying the extra fee for, and a LENS·IELTS sitting will tell you whether the band is already there before you pay the fee twice.

Applying to universities in the UAE. Most accept IELTS, and many accept TOEFL and PTE. Confirm with the specific programme, because requirements differ by faculty rather than by university.

Before you book anything, find out where you actually stand

The most expensive mistake here is not choosing the wrong test. It is booking the right test too early and scoring half a band below the requirement.

Sit a timed diagnostic first. Frequently asked questions

Is Duolingo accepted instead of IELTS?

For university admission in the United States and at many universities in Canada, Europe and the UK, yes. For student visa purposes in the UK and Australia, no. Canada does not mandate a test for most study permits, so a Duolingo score can work through the university's offer, but it is not an IRCC designated test.

Which test is easiest?

None of them is easier by design. PTE suits fast typists who are comfortable speaking to a computer. IELTS suits students who perform better talking to a person. Duolingo is shortest but adaptive, so it gets harder as you do well.

Is PTE Academic accepted for a UK visa?

Yes, but only the PTE Academic UKVI variant. Standard PTE Academic is not accepted for UK immigration purposes even though the test content is the same.

Can I retake just one section?

Only with IELTS, through One Skill Retake, usually within a set window after the original test. PTE and Duolingo require a full retake.

How long are scores valid?

Two years is the standard validity period across all three, though individual universities may apply a shorter window. Do not sit the test in Grade 11 for an application you will submit in Grade 13.

Which test should a Dubai student take for a UK university?

IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI. Both are on the Home Office approved list. Pick on format and on how quickly you need the result.
