Commerce students in Dubai: 90% in Class 12 is a result, not a plan

Every year around March, a familiar conversation happens in Dubai living rooms. The Class 12 commerce student has worked hard, the board result lands somewhere above 90, the family celebrates, and then someone asks the question nobody prepared for. What now?

That question used to have an easy answer. A strong percentage opened doors on its own. It no longer does, and commerce families in the UAE feel this more sharply than most, because they are choosing between two admission systems at once.

What actually changed

Central universities in India stopped admitting students on board percentage alone. Admission to those undergraduate programmes now runs through the Common University Entrance Test, conducted by the National Testing Agency. A student with 96 in Class 12 and no CUET score is not in the race at Delhi University. A student with 84 and a strong CUET score is.

National Law Universities have worked this way for years through CLAT. The IIMs did the same thing when they opened five year management programmes to Class 12 students, selected through IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak.

The pattern is consistent. Board marks now clear you for eligibility. An entrance score decides whether you get in.

The three doors open to a commerce student

Most commerce students in the UAE end up walking through one of these.

Law. Five year integrated LLB programmes at the National Law Universities, entered through CLAT. The paper runs two hours with roughly 120 questions built almost entirely around passages: English comprehension, current affairs, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and a light quantitative section. Registration usually opens in August and the exam sits in the first week of December, a full five months before your board exams finish. Read that sentence again, because it decides your Grade 11 calendar. For the current cycle the Consortium opened registration on 3 August 2026, closes it on 31 October 2026, and runs the paper on 6 December 2026 in offline pen and paper mode. One point UAE families should check early: CLAT itself is open only to Indian citizens, and students on foreign passports enter the National Law Universities through separate channels.

Management. IPMAT gives a Class 12 student direct entry into a five year programme at IIM Indore or IIM Rohtak, finishing with an MBA. IIM Indore asks for no minimum Class 12 percentage and accepts students from any stream, including IGCSE and IB candidates with proper transcripts. The paper is school level mathematics and English, tested at speed under sectional time limits. Indore runs 90 questions for 360 marks in 120 minutes, split across quantitative ability in multiple choice form, quantitative ability as short answers and verbal ability, with four marks for a correct answer and one negative on wrong multiple choice answers. Rohtak runs a fully multiple choice paper of 120 questions for 480 marks. The Indore score is also accepted by IIM Ranchi, IIM Shillong and IIM Amritsar, and by IIM Sirmaur for its management studies degree, while JIPMAT covers IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu. Outside the IIMs, private universities run their own BBA entrance tests, and several strong Indian BBA programmes sit behind CUET.

The quantitative section is where UAE commerce students get caught. A student who dropped mathematics after Grade 10 is at a serious disadvantage here. If management is anywhere on the list, keep mathematics.

General degrees through CUET. Economics honours, B.Com honours, BMS, BA programmes across central and state universities. The rules changed for the 2026 cycle and most families have not caught up. Students may now choose any CUET domain subject regardless of what they studied in Class 12, the exam runs in computer based mode only, the paper count dropped from 63 to 37, every subject paper is fixed at 60 minutes, and all 50 questions in a paper are compulsory. Marking is plus five for a correct answer and minus one for a wrong one, so the old habit of skipping weak areas no longer exists. Fifty compulsory questions in sixty minutes is a different sport from a three hour board paper, and that is the skill Grade 11 should be building.

There is a fourth door, and plenty of UAE families use it: applying to universities in the UAE, UK, US or Europe. That route has its own timeline built around predicted grades, the SAT and personal statements. It is a legitimate plan. It is not a fallback you pick up in February of Grade 12.

Why Grade 11 is the real deadline

Look at when these exams actually happen relative to boards.

Nothing in that table leaves room for a student who starts in Grade 12. A CLAT aspirant has to be exam ready by November of Grade 12, which means the reading speed, the legal reasoning technique and the current affairs habit were built in Grade 11. An IPMAT aspirant walks into a speed maths paper within a week of finishing boards, with no gap to warm up.

Starting in Grade 11 buys you something better than extra hours. It buys you the freedom to change your mind once, cheaply, at a point where switching from law to management still costs you three months rather than a year.

The UAE layer most families miss

Two practical things shape how a Dubai family should plan.

CUET conducts its exam in a set of cities outside India, and the fee for an overseas centre is considerably higher than the Indian one. That helps. CLAT, by contrast, has historically been a pen and paper test conducted at centres inside India, so a UAE family plans flights, a hotel and a quiet weekend in early December. Confirm the centre list on the Consortium website each cycle before you assume anything.

Eligibility is the second one. Documentation for IGCSE, A Level and IB students applying to Indian institutions takes time: equivalence certificates, transcripts, percentage conversion under board rules. Start that paperwork in Grade 11, not in the week the application closes.

How to choose a direction without guessing

A fifteen year old cannot be expected to name a profession. They can be expected to find out what kind of thinking they are good at, and that is a smaller, answerable question.

A student who reads quickly, argues well and enjoys an ambiguous problem usually thrives in CLAT preparation. A student who is quick and accurate with numbers under time pressure tends to do well at IPMAT. A student who is strong in the Class 12 syllabus itself and wants a specific university programme is often best served by a focused CUET plan.

Test the hypothesis before you commit a year to it. A structured aptitude and subject diagnostic in Grade 10 or early Grade 11 will tell you far more than another family discussion. What a sensible Grade 11 looks like

Four to six focused hours a week, alongside school. Not more. A student carrying Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics does not have capacity for a second full workload, and a plan that ignores this collapses by October.

Those hours should go into building the thing the exam actually measures: reading volume and comprehension for CLAT, speed and accuracy in arithmetic and algebra for IPMAT, syllabus mastery and question practice for CUET. Sectional tests from the start. A full mock every month from the second half of Grade 11.

By April of Grade 11, you should know your target exam, your realistic score band and the three universities you are aiming at. That is the whole plan. Everything after it is execution.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child prepare for CLAT and IPMAT together?

For a short period, yes, since both reward reading and quantitative fluency. Past the first term of Grade 11 the papers diverge sharply and split preparation produces two mediocre scores. Pick one primary exam and treat the other as a backup at most.

Is CUET necessary if we are applying to universities in the UAE or abroad?

No. CUET matters for Indian central and participating universities. Many UAE families run the overseas route only, and that is a complete plan on its own. Attempting both is possible but needs the calendar mapped out in Grade 11.

Does a low Class 12 percentage rule out IPMAT?

IIM Indore has removed the minimum Class 12 percentage requirement, and students from any stream may apply. IIM Rohtak does specify minimum aggregates in Class 10 and 12 for certain categories. Check both official sites for the current cycle before you plan around either.

Are IGCSE and IB students eligible for Indian entrance exams?

Yes, with the required transcripts and equivalence documentation. The conversion of grades into a percentage follows the rules published by the conducting body, so read those rules early rather than assuming a formula.

When should we start?

End of Grade 10 for direction, start of Grade 11 for preparation. Families who begin in Grade 12 are usually choosing between a compromised score and a drop year.
