Commerce subjects in CBSE Class 11 and 12: what each one covers, maths or applied maths, and the 2027 board dates
In short
CBSE defines no commerce stream: students combine business electives such as Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, and may add Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, never both.
- Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics each carry an 80-mark theory paper and a 20-mark project.
- Commerce board papers run from Cost Accounting, 17 February 2027, to Business Studies, 1 April.
- CBSE publishes Class 12 sample papers with marking schemes, but none for Class 11.

CBSE defines no commerce stream. Its scheme of studies for Classes 11 and 12 sets out subject groups and slot rules instead: students combine business electives such as Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, and may add Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, never both.

Is there a commerce stream in CBSE?
Not in CBSE's rules: the 2026-27 scheme of studies never uses the word "stream". It sorts subjects into languages (Group L), academic electives (Group A) and skill electives (Group S), and names Business Studies, Accountancy, Entrepreneurship and Economics among its business and commerce electives. A student takes at least five subjects in Class 11 and keeps the same ones in Class 12:
| Slot | What can go in it |
|---|---|
| Subject 1 | Hindi or English, at Core or Elective level |
| Subject 2 | A second language from Group L, or an elective from Group A |
| Subjects 3 and 4 | An elective from Group A or Group S |
| Subject 5 | An elective from Group A |
| Subject 6 (optional) | A language or elective from Group L or A |
English Core, Economics, Accountancy, Business Studies and Applied Mathematics is one combination the rules allow, and CBSE's scheme lets skill electives such as Cost Accounting and Marketing sit alongside any subject. The pairs CBSE bars include Business Studies (054) with Business Administration (833), and Mathematics (041) with Applied Mathematics (241).
What each commerce subject covers in Class 11 and Class 12
Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics each carry an 80-mark theory paper and a 20-mark project, in both years. Applied Mathematics has 80 marks of theory and 20 of internal assessment. Entrepreneurship (066) has a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks for projects (syllabus).

Accountancy Class 11 and Class 12
Accountancy in Class 11 runs from the theoretical framework through the accounting process to a sole proprietorship's financial statements. Class 12 covers partnership firms and companies, then a choice for the last 20 marks: Analysis of Financial Statements or Computerised Accounting, attempting only one. (Syllabus)
Business Studies Class 11 and Class 12
Business Studies in Class 11 covers forms of business, enterprises, business services and ethics, then sources of finance, small business and trade. Class 12 is management, from its principles and planning to controlling, then financial management and markets, marketing and consumer protection. (Syllabus)
Economics Class 11 and Class 12
Economics in Class 11 is half statistics, half microeconomics: consumer demand, producer supply and price under perfect competition. Class 12 pairs macroeconomics (national income, money and banking, the budget, the balance of payments) with Indian Economic Development, where Current Challenges facing Indian Economy alone carries 20 marks. (Syllabus)
Applied Mathematics Class 11 and Class 12
Applied Mathematics leans towards money and data: interest, annuities, bonds, EMI and depreciation, correlation and regression, probability distributions, time series and linear programming, with calculus in both years. The Class 12 sample paper does not allow calculators. (Syllabus, sample paper)
Mathematics or Applied Mathematics?
CBSE's FAQ on Applied Mathematics says there is only one option, and that the two are different courses, neither a substitute for the other. It describes Mathematics (041) as "meant for students to pursue pure Mathematics/Physical Sciences/Engineering at University Level", and Applied Mathematics as for students who need mathematics in areas such as business, economics or finance.
CBSE's 2020 circular says students aiming at Mathematics Honours or engineering may take Mathematics (041), and suggests students, parents and schools choose with the subject's scope for university admission in mind. CBSE does not list which degrees accept Applied Mathematics, so check each course's own entry requirements.
After Basic Mathematics in Class 10. The 2020 circular says a student who passed Mathematics Basic is not eligible for Mathematics (041), the FAQ says they can take Applied Mathematics, and the 2025-26 Class 9 and 10 curriculum repeated both. The 2026-27 documents do not restate it: the 2026-27 Class 9 and 10 curriculum says the Basic and Standard scheme will be discontinued, but this year's Class 10 may still opt for Basic. Ask the school and check the current CBSE notice before choosing.
Projects: 20 marks in each of the main three
In Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics the project is 20 of the subject's 100 marks (2027 marks circular).
- Accountancy: in Class 11, one of three projects, such as a Bank Reconciliation Statement; in Class 12, a company's financial statement analysis (or a Computerised Accounting practical file), 12 for the file and 8 for the viva.
- Business Studies: one project a year, 8 marks for the viva; in Class 12, 25 to 30 handwritten pages from one of four units.
- Economics: one project a session of 3,500 to 4,000 words, 8 marks for the viva.
- Entrepreneurship: two projects of 10 marks each, plus 5 for numerical assessment and 5 for the viva.
- Applied Mathematics: 20 marks of internal assessment, not broken down in the 2026-27 syllabus.

Class 11 exams and sample papers
Class 11 is a school exam: CBSE says its assessment is similar to the Class 12 board exam but carried out at school level, so the school sets the dates and papers. Grades run from A1 (91 to 100) to D (33 to 40), and 32 or below is Essential Repeat.
CBSE publishes Class 12 sample papers with marking schemes, but none for Class 11. The 2026-27 Class 12 papers include Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Applied Mathematics and Entrepreneurship.
