WHERE MARKS ARE LOST
What the examiners keep pointing out.
From the boards’ own reports on recent exams, in our words. These are the points lessons and practice papers are built around.
Knowing each book of prime entry. Many treated the sales journal as a general journal with debits and credits, when it is a list of credit sales after trade discount. Cambridge 0452 examiner report, June 2024
Journal entries the right way round. Entries to write off an irrecoverable debt were reversed, or the narrative was missing or incomplete. Cambridge 0452 examiner report, June 2024
No abbreviations in the accounts. Shortcuts such as BBD for balance b/d, or GP and NP for gross profit and profit for the year, are not accepted. Cambridge 0452 examiner report, June 2024
Reading what the question asks. In an imprest question many gave the balance left ($53) instead of the amount needed to top it up ($97), and some lost time redrawing the whole petty cash book. Cambridge 0452 examiner report, June 2024
Dates and details in the ledger. Ledger accounts kept losing marks for wrong dates and details: the details column must name the other side of the double entry. Some reversed the debit and credit sides of cash book items. Pearson 4AC1 examiner report, June 2025
Following a correction all the way through. Correcting a repair wrongly posted to machinery, few also adjusted the depreciation. In partnership accounts a salary was worked out for one month only, and trade receivables were not shown after the allowance. Pearson 4AC1 examiner report, June 2025
HOW LESSONS WORK
Start from the gap. Build to the exam.
Start from the syllabus code. The first conversation takes the board, the code, the tier and a recent test or mock, so lessons start from where marks are actually going.
Teach the topic, then the question. Each topic is taught for understanding, then practised on the board’s own past papers and marked against its mark scheme.
Mocks, then the exam. Timed papers and mock review in the run-up to the exams, so method, wording and pace hold up on the day.
WHERE TO FIND US
IGCSE accounting tuition in Dubai and Sharjah.
Three centres, and online classes for students who live further away. Contact the closest centre and the team will confirm where and how IGCSE accounting is taught for your board.
Yes, from the 2027 exams. The code stays 0452, Paper 1 grows to 40 multiple choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, and the syllabus adds ethics, and technology and sustainability. Paper 2 keeps its five 20-mark questions.
Where do students lose marks in IGCSE accounting?
In the detail. Examiners on both Cambridge and Edexcel report reversed debit and credit entries, ledger accounts without the right dates and details, abbreviations such as GP for gross profit, and corrections not followed through to the depreciation.
Is IGCSE accounting tiered?
No. On Cambridge, Edexcel and OxfordAQA everyone sits the same papers, and every grade is open to every student.
Are calculators allowed in IGCSE accounting?
Yes. Cambridge 0452 allows a calculator in both papers, and Pearson’s sample papers for 4AC1 allow one too.
Is IGCSE accounting tuition at a centre or online?
Both. Classes run at our centres in Bur Dubai, Al Nahda 2 and Al Qasimia, Sharjah, and online, as batch classes, small groups or one to one. The team confirms the format, the tutor and the timings before you enrol.
Ideally early in Year 10, when the two-year course begins, and at the latest once the Year 11 mocks show where marks are being lost. An early start leaves time to fix gaps in core topics rather than cramming past papers in the spring.
