THE SYLLABUS, BOARD BY BOARD
IGCSE Economics: the papers you will sit.
Schools in the UAE enter IGCSE economics with Cambridge (0455, or 0987, the same course graded 9 to 1, which Cambridge offers to UAE schools), Pearson Edexcel (4EC1) or OxfordAQA (9214). Cambridge’s papers change from the 2027 exams; the Cambridge papers below are those from June 2027.

WHERE MARKS ARE LOST
What the examiners keep pointing out.
From the boards’ own reports on recent exams, in our words. These are the points lessons and practice papers are built around.
Elasticity the wrong way up. In the price elasticity calculation some divided the change in price by the change in quantity, getting 3.33 instead of −0.3, or turned the answer into a percentage. Cambridge 0455 examiner report, June 2024
Only what the extract says. Data answers used facts that were not in the extract, such as giving rent as a factor reward when the extract named only wages and profits. Cambridge 0455 examiner report, June 2024
Answers in the right place. Answers were written under the wrong question number or questions were missed, diagrams lacked accurate axis labels, and some longer answers drifted to a different question. Cambridge 0455 examiner report, June 2024
Evidence that does some work. Copying evidence from the extracts earned no marks unless it was used in the argument. Pearson 4EC1 examiner report, June 2025
Answering the question set. A fiscal deficit was confused with a current account deficit, and a question on monetary policy and unemployment was answered about inflation. “Analyse” needs one side; “assess” and “evaluate” need two, and “evaluate” a judgement as well. Pearson 4EC1 examiner report, June 2025
HOW LESSONS WORK
Start from the gap. Build to the exam.
Start from the syllabus code. The first conversation takes the board, the code, the tier and a recent test or mock, so lessons start from where marks are actually going.
Teach the topic, then the question. Each topic is taught for understanding, then practised on the board’s own past papers and marked against its mark scheme.
Mocks, then the exam. Timed papers and mock review in the run-up to the exams, so method, wording and pace hold up on the day.
TAKING GCSE INSTEAD?
GCSE Economics.
UK GCSE Economics is a separate qualification. AQA 8136 has two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 80 marks, How markets work and How the economy works, graded 9 to 1. Tell us the board, and lessons follow that specification.
WHERE TO FIND US
IGCSE economics tuition in Dubai and Sharjah.
Three centres, and online classes for students who live further away. Contact the closest centre and the team will confirm where and how IGCSE economics is taught for your board.
Yes, from the 2027 exams. The code stays 0455, but Paper 1 becomes 40 multiple choice questions in an hour and Paper 2 two hours for 80 marks, with sustainability through every topic and some topics removed. Students sitting from June 2027 follow the new syllabus.
Why do students find IGCSE economics hard?
The definitions are the easy part. Examiners on both Cambridge and Edexcel report marks lost on calculations such as elasticity, on diagrams without labels, on evidence copied from the extract without using it, and on answers that analyse when the question asks them to evaluate.
Are diagrams needed in IGCSE economics?
Yes. Questions on all the boards use diagrams such as demand and supply, and a diagram earns its marks only with labelled axes, labelled curves and the new equilibrium shown.
Is IGCSE economics tiered?
No. On Cambridge, Edexcel and OxfordAQA everyone sits the same papers, and every grade is open to every student.
Is IGCSE economics tuition at a centre or online?
Both. Classes run at our centres in Bur Dubai, Al Nahda 2 and Al Qasimia, Sharjah, and online, as batch classes, small groups or one to one. The team confirms the format, the tutor and the timings before you enrol.
Ideally early in Year 10, when the two-year course begins, and at the latest once the Year 11 mocks show where marks are being lost. An early start leaves time to fix gaps in core topics rather than cramming past papers in the spring.
