WHERE MARKS ARE LOST
What the examiners keep pointing out.
From the boards’ own reports on recent exams, in our words. These are the points lessons and practice papers are built around.
Answers not about the business in the question. Many answers lost marks because they were not applied to the business named, and some repeated one point: each point is credited once, so each needs its own application and analysis. Cambridge 0450 examiner report, June 2024
Profit does not simply rise or fall. Candidates claimed profit would go up or down after a change in price or cost, ignoring how many are sold. Answers about the profit margin did better. Cambridge 0450 examiner report, June 2024
A decision that follows from the argument. Evaluation was weak: a justified decision must follow from the analysis without repeating it. On the case study, listed points stayed in the lowest level, and a recommendation had to say why the other option was rejected. Cambridge 0450 examiner report, June 2024
Set every answer in the case. Even short “state” and “outline” answers lost the mark when they were not linked to the business, such as naming a research method without saying how this business would use it. Pearson 4BS1 examiner report, June 2025
Formulas and the format asked for. Instructions such as two decimal places or an answer in a currency were ignored, and formulas the paper does not give had not been learned. Pearson 4BS1 examiner report, June 2025
Right length, right command word. Time went on rewriting the question or overloading three-mark “explain” answers, which need about three sentences. “Define” needs a definition, not a description. Pearson 4BS1 examiner report, June 2025
HOW LESSONS WORK
Start from the gap. Build to the exam.
Start from the syllabus code. The first conversation takes the board, the code, the tier and a recent test or mock, so lessons start from where marks are actually going.
Teach the topic, then the question. Each topic is taught for understanding, then practised on the board’s own past papers and marked against its mark scheme.
Mocks, then the exam. Timed papers and mock review in the run-up to the exams, so method, wording and pace hold up on the day.
TAKING GCSE INSTEAD?
GCSE Business.
UK GCSE Business is a separate qualification. AQA 8132 and Pearson Edexcel 1BS0 each have two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes and 90 marks, graded 9 to 1, mixing multiple choice, short answers, calculations, case studies and extended writing. Tell us the board, and lessons follow that specification.
WHERE TO FIND US
IGCSE business tuition in Dubai and Sharjah.
Three centres, and online classes for students who live further away. Contact the closest centre and the team will confirm where and how IGCSE business is taught for your board.
Is Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 changing?
Yes. Its last exams are in November 2026. From June 2027 schools sit Cambridge IGCSE Business 0264 instead: two papers of the same shape, with more marks for applying answers to the business in the question and new topics on technology and sustainable production.
Why do good students lose marks in IGCSE business?
Mostly because answers stay general. Examiners on both Cambridge and Edexcel ask for every point applied to the business in the question, a chain of analysis for each, and a decision that follows from the argument. Formulas the paper does not give must be learned too.
Is IGCSE business tiered?
No. On Cambridge, Edexcel and OxfordAQA everyone sits the same two papers, and every grade is open to every student.
Are calculators allowed in IGCSE business?
Yes. Cambridge’s papers allow a calculator, and Pearson Edexcel allows one in both 4BS1 papers. Calculations such as break-even, cash flow and ratios come up on every board.
Is IGCSE business tuition at a centre or online?
Both. Classes run at our centres in Bur Dubai, Al Nahda 2 and Al Qasimia, Sharjah, and online, as batch classes, small groups or one to one. The team confirms the format, the tutor and the timings before you enrol.
Ideally early in Year 10, when the two-year course begins, and at the latest once the Year 11 mocks show where marks are being lost. An early start leaves time to fix gaps in core topics rather than cramming past papers in the spring.
